Position Summary

Leads the development and implementation of Health and Safety (H and S) management systems and programs.

Works with Executive Leadership, General Managers, Plant Managers, unions and H and S champions to effectively manage and continuously improve and align the goals and objectives for the company in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, governmental and global standards.

The Director is responsible for providing leadership and direction in the planning, development, implementation, compliance and evaluation of worldwide H and S matters. The role is responsible for identifying and minimizing risks and liabilities to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations and corporate policies. The Director is the designated contact with regulatory agencies and all other entities outside the company supporting H and S issues. This role works collaboratively with the Environmental Department, Strategic Risk Management, Accounting and Finance, Mergers & Acquisitions, Facilities Supply Chain, Legal, Business Units and Plants to provide uniform and consistent direction.

The Director is a member of the Human Resources Department with strong dotted line relationships to legal and operations. The Director leads a team of approximately 6 direct reports.

Key Accountabilities
  • Manages strategic development, implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive global H and S management system, and environmental from the standpoint of work place hazards and industrial hygiene.
  • Envisions and adapts best practices to ensure company is a global leader in H and S.
  • Works with the executive team on global H and S strategies; must have ability to present new ideas to corporate, get buy-in, and take accountability for projects.
  • Assures compliance of company operations to all applicable laws, regulations and standards, good business practices and company documented procedures to include knowledge of all standards, government occupational health and safety regulations and statues related to individual company locations.
  • Establishes H and S strategies and goals necessary to achieve excellence in performance across all company locations.
  • Develops and implements H and S policies, standards, guidelines and programs to meet the overall strategy for the prevention and control of H and S risks.
  • Establishes and monitors key performance metrics to measure performance progress and to evaluate H and S program effectiveness; advises organization leaders on performance improvements and leads improvement initiatives.
  • Manages and leads H and S management systems, i.e., ISO 14001, OHSA 18001 and ISO 50001 to ensure conformance with standard requirements.
  • Coordinates and conducts H and S site audits; analyzes and interprets results, recommends improvement actions, communicates and follows up on issues or concerns to achieve targeted results; benchmarks performance against world-wide peers in both sector and general industry.
  • Develops and analyzes safety information reporting, consolidates and reports key H and S statistics monthly, quarterly and annually as required.
  • Interprets legislation on relevant issues and provides practical guidance, support and training aimed at maintaining and developing best practices; coordinates location specific regulatory health and safety education and training programs and requirements.
  • Administers operational budget and long-range budget planning that identify creative solutions that improve H and S quality in a cost effective manner.
  • Investigates or directs the investigations of H and S incidents.
  • Work with Global Security Director on matters related to security or workplace violence

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Industrial Hygiene or related field
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred
  • At least 10 years of safety experience within a global manufacturing environment
  • 5+ years of supervisory and leadership experience
  • Strong understanding of government regulations in health and safety
  • Proven ability to achieve regulatory compliance in a manufacturing environment
  • Demonstrated orientation to understanding the business strategy and the ability to apply safety program process and tools to support strategic business objectives
  • Candidate must be able to embrace and lead change in a dynamic environment
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with all levels of the organization, including the ability to effectively present and discuss technical information and respond to questions from leaders

Must have a working understanding of health and safety regulations, with extensive experience in the development, maintenance and implementation of H and S systems.

Knowledgeable in the technical fundamentals of safety management and risk assessments and reduction, including machinery and process safety, industrial hygiene, loss prevention, ergonomics and occupational health.

Ability to work within the United States and abroad.
  • Experience in the following areas beneficial: lean manufacturing, ISO 14001, OHSA 18001 and ISO 50001 Six Sigma, H and S software.
