Associate/Full Specialist - UCB Labor Center - Inst. For Research on Labor and Employment

The UC Berkeley Labor Center has openings for two full - or part-time policy researchers with the possibility of renewal dependent on funding.

Founded in 1964, the UC Berkeley Labor Center works on the most pressing economic challenges affecting working families in California and communities across the country. The Labor Center provides timely, policy-relevant research on labor and employment issues for policymakers and stakeholders, and conducts training for a new and diverse generation of worker leaders and students.

The specialists will conduct time-sensitive policy research on labor and employment issues, as well as provide technical assistance to stakeholders in California. These positions offer an opportunity to be part of a high-impact, high-visibility organization that is making a difference in the lives of working families and communities of color. They also provide the opportunity to work with a nationally-recognized team of researchers, policy analysts, and academics.

Responsibilities include:
• Conducting policy research on labor standards policies and employment issues in the state of California
• Providing technical assistance to stakeholders and policy makers on issues related to low-wage work, labor standards and other labor and employment topics
• Coordinating research with academic researchers on other UC Campuses
• Contributing to research reports and policy briefs, and drafting op-eds and public testimony
Additional responsibilities for Full Specialist:
• Serving as lead author on research and policy reports
• Overseeing large research reports
• Supervising graduate student research assistants and junior staff
• Helping to secure research grants and serving as a Principal Investigator on grants
Basic qualifications (required by time of application):
• Master's degree or equivalent international degree
Additional qualifications (required by start date):
• Minimum of 5 years post degree research experience

Preferred qualifications:
• Record of publishing including serving as lead author on research and policy reports
• Master's degree or equivalent international degree in Public Policy, Sociology, Economics, Geography, City and Regional Planning, or related field, or JD.
• Five years relevant experience in research and/or policy analysis
• Proven ability to carry out complex research and policy analyses in the area of labor and employment
• Writing and communication skills, geared toward policy research reports
• Knowledge of labor standards policies and workers' rights
• Experience working with academic researchers and labor, community & government stakeholders
• Ability to work independently

Additional preferred qualifications for full specialist level:
• 10 years experience in research and policy analysis; or PhD in Public Policy, Sociology, Economics, Geography, City and Regional Planning, or related field, or JD

Salary will be commensurate with experience. Expected Start date May 1, 2019
