JOB SUMMARY:

Position Description

Clemson University is accepting applications in its search for the University Ombuds for Staff. Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, this position serves all administrative staff throughout the institution and performs the functions of the position through the Clemson University Ombuds Office in conjunction with the University Ombuds for Faculty and Students.

The Position:

The University Ombuds for Staff is a designated neutral and informal dispute resolution practitioner whose function is to provide independent, confidential assistance to all staff throughout the institution. This assistance is an alternative to formal administrative channels, supplementing them but not replacing them. The ombuds assists in clarifying the nature of underlying concerns and helps generate and evaluate an array of options for addressing/resolving the concerns, including referral to other available resources. They foster communication between individuals involved in conflict and assists those individuals in resolving their issues. The University Ombuds for Staff operates within the University Ombuds Office in a collaborative capacity with the University Ombuds for Faculty and Students. They provide consultation to organizational leaders as necessary regarding trends and themes and may seek external independent legal counsel as deemed necessary. Dispute resolution, consultation and referral: The ombuds is responsible for identifying and clarifying concerns and conflicts and generating and evaluation option for resolution of conflicts. Advocates for fair process and the administration of processes. Provides coaching to individuals on effective strategies and skills in the resolution of their concerns.

Organizational and management consultation: The ombuds is responsible for identifying systemic issues and trends that cause conflict at the University; Works with an advisory committee in exploring effective ways to address system concerns; Serves as an organizational resource for evaluating policies and procedures related to staff.

Training and education: The ombuds is responsible for designing and delivering education and training programs for staff related to conflict management/resolution and related topics.

Professional development: The ombuds is responsible for engagement in appropriate and ongoing continuing education and development, including but not limited to requirements to attain and maintain ombuds certification.

Expectations:

  • The University Ombuds for Staff adheres to the IOA Professional Standards of Practice; does not accept notice on behalf of the University; and, does not participate in formal adjudicatory processes.
  • All communications will be treated with strict confidentiality to the extent permissible by South Carolina law and Federal law.
  • The incumbent must not serve in any other capacity that would be considered a conflict of interest.
  • The incumbent must have strong communication skills, both oral and written, and able to effectively communicate with individuals from diverse background at all levels of the organization.

Work Schedule and Salary information:

Standard Hrs: 37.5; Band: 08; Salary will be competitive within market range based on qualifications.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Education - Bachelor's Degree
  • Experience - 3+ years as an organizational ombuds or dispute resolution professional

Preferred:

  • Education - Master's Degree
  • Experience - Relevant field experience in higher education leadership
